Great post on Steve Job’s impact, and the complexity of his style.

lilly:

Like many of us, I’ve been thinking a lot about Steve Jobs the last few days — thinking about the man and his legacy. I’ve been having some trouble even understanding the way I feel, let alone being able to put it into words. Lots of folks have asked me what I think, and have been surprised that I…

This is Facebook’s Director of Engineering, Jocelyn Goldfein speaking at Women In Technology International.

My reaction: Do you know what I get to do every day? I get to build things! I get to work with an incredibly talented team, and kick ass. I get to bring the my fierce passion, my bouncy joy and my mischievous inquisitiveness to bear. And there’s nothing that makes me feel more like the QueenOfTheWorld than when my shite works. ;) Clearly, I am lucky beyond words :D

‎”What’s wrong with the old model is simply that it’s analog, and we live in a digital world.”

The advance of Open Access to the scholarly literature is pretty hard to miss at this point. The Directory of Open Access Journals lists more than 7000 titles now, and the percentage of global articles that are OA is now somewhere above 10%. Revenues on OA journals are in the tens of millions…

Nathan and I have gone through the pain of upgrading our implementation to OAuth 2.0.  We’ve written blog posts on the changes both JS and Server Side to upgrade your Facebook for Websites implementation up to OAuth 2.0 so that the change on 10/1 doesn’t break your stuff!

Loving the work that’s coming out of “Operation Developer Love”.  The developer app used to be really hard for developers with lots of apps to navigate to their app. Once you got to your app, it was hard to know where to look for the setting that was messing you up, or the information that you needed.  These changes make me incredibly happy

There’s a lot of data out there - just in formats that aren’t particularly useful to people.  Here’s a quick post of how one Code For America fellow made information on farmers markets easier to find.  Kudos!

A lot has already been said about Randi leaving Facebook - some of it with sensationalist titles.  This link actually has her resignation letter to Sheryl Sandberg and Elliot Schrage.  My favorite line in it:

“I am thankful for the strong mentorship, guidance, and support, which is empowering me to follow my dreams and show that you don’t have to be an engineer to be a hacker.”

Happy hacking :)

Facebook’s social design is driven in part by their “Analog Research Laboratory” - which has things like silk screening gear, a printing press and a (wet!) darkroom.  (I think the wet darkroom part is the bit that has me the most jealous). Their posters (and stickers) are up all over Facebook HQ and set the feel of the place - quirky, fearless, and in odd ways somewhat humble.

Read the article for more on how it actually influences the design of the Facebook website. :)

Interesting statistics on Facebook mobile user base.  Good to know for any entrepreneurs who are thinking about the intersection of Facebook + Mobile.  Though granted, startups in that space probably do more in depth research of their market ;)

Wish there was a class like that when I was in school! :)
